What is Acupuncture

needling acupressure

Acupuncture is one aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It involves the insertion of very fine needles at specific points on the body surface. There are over 200 acupuncture points on the human ear alone and in excess of 300 on the main body surface. A skillful practitioner can therefore choose the most appropriate acupuncture points for you - a tailor made prescription for your condition.

Acupuncture can be applied as a sole treatment option. It can also be used in tandem with other forms of TCM such as Cupping, Moxabustion, Tuina massage, Electro-Acupuncture and Chinese Dietary Therapy. Most importantly it can be used in conjunction with Conventional Medicine.

TCM is an ancient and sophisticated form of medicine. It is a comprehensive system of natural medicine that is used to diagnose, treat and prevent illness. It originated in China over three thousand years ago and it has been the primary health care system in most East Asian countries for over a thousand years.

WHY ACUPUNCTURE

The main objective of acupuncture is to restore both internal, external and emotional health. It can address deficiency or breakdown in health and can focus on both physical and psychological imbalances. TCM makes no distinction between physical and mental health.

There is no limitation in terms of age, sex or particular condition regarding acupuncture treatment. From infancy to old age acupuncture can be applied with beneficial effect.

According to The World Health Organisation and the National Institutes of Health, Acupuncture is useful in the treatment of in excess of 100 different conditions.

Expectant mothers can be greatly assisted with acupuncture treatment as a drug free option.

DOES IT HURT

The sensation varies and any sensation felt is generally quite mild. The sensation may differ from person to person or indeed from one treatment to another.

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine therefore only a slight sensation is felt on insertion. The practitioner then stimulates the needle to induce one of the following sensations: a feeling of warmth, coolness, tingling, heaviness, pressure or numbness around the point. This sensation is called the Qi sensation and it means that your body is responding to the treatment.

People are often surprised to find that treatments are quite relaxing.

YOUR SAFETY

Only sterile, single use, disposable needles are used. The needles are sterilised during their manufacture and are packed in a sealed container. They are discarded in a biohazard unit after use.

Acupuncture is entirely safe and free from unwanted side effects.
